Not sure how a 4-on-3-off shift pattern works? We’ve got you. Read on to find out everything you need to get your head round this popular rota schedule.
What is a 4-on-3-off shift pattern?
The 4-on-3-off shift pattern is a rota schedule where employees work for four days in a row, followed by three days off, then work for four days, and so on. This type of pattern is often organised so that a business is staffed around the clock.
That’s why you’ll generally find the 4-on-3-off pattern in industries that are in constant operation day and night, such as factories, hospitals or call centres.
The most common setup for the 4-on-3-off pattern is for employees to work four 12-hour shifts (either day or night), followed by three days off. After a set period, employees then switch to a different shift time (day or night) to keep things fair.
How does the 4-on-3-off shift pattern work?
So, how does one actually work? Here’s how a typical 4-on-3-off pattern might look:
Week 1:
- Days 1 - 4: Work (12-hour shifts)
- Days 5 - 7: Off
Week 2:
- Days 8 - 11: Work (12-hour shifts)
- Days 12 - 14: Off
Why use a 4-on-3-off shift pattern?
There are all sorts of benefits to using this type of shift schedule - for both employers and employees.
Improved work/life balance
The most obvious benefit for employees is the extra time off each week. With three consecutive days off, workers have more opportunities to rest, spend time with family or friends and enjoy their lives.

Increased productivity
From an employer’s perspective, the four concentrated working days - with typically longer shifts during those days - means more focus and more productivity. Employees know they have a decent break coming up, so they’re more productive during work hours.
Reduced costs
Fewer employees need to be scheduled to work with the 4-on-3-off system, which can reduce the need for overtime or hiring additional staff to cover multiple shifts. And longer shifts means fewer shift transitions and smoother operations.
More flexibility
Since the 4-on-3-off pattern can be rotated and adjusted to meet individual or business needs, it offers lots of customisation and flexibility for employers and staff. And shifts can be switched and schedules adjusted, giving staff greater control over their working hours.
What are the challenges of a 4-on-3-off shift pattern?
As with any shift pattern, the 4-on-3-off system has its drawbacks. These are some things you might want to consider:
Fatigue
Extended hours on the job, especially during a graveyard shift, can lead to fatigue, especially if employees are not able to rest adequately during their time off.
Impact on family life
While the extended time off can be a benefit, the irregular hours may be challenging for employees with families, especially those with young children or caregiving responsibilities.
Health concerns
Irregular sleep patterns can contribute to health issues like fatigue and stress. Over time, these issues can add up and impact employees' overall health and well-being.
Employee burnout
Working long hours over several days can lead to burnout - even with time off in between. If not managed properly this can lead to employees leaving their roles.
